Within the Jewish tradition, the noble effort to help others through charity is called “tzedakah,” a word that actually means right or justice.  It is also a way of saying thank you to someone who has performed a “mitzvah” or a good deed.

The Washington Institiute for Conversion and the Study of Judaism works to bring knowledge of our Jewish traditions to all who seek to learn them—both Jew and non-Jew alike—but its many projects require funding.  Money is needed for advertising, to hire excellent teachers, and to offer scholarships to those unable to afford the cost of the course.  In response to the high rate of intermarriage (well over 52%), the Institute would like to expand its classes beyond the Washington, D.C. area, but it cannot do so without support.  Education is the key for both the Jew by birth who feels a lack of knowledge about his or her own traditional backround and wants to learn more, and for the potential Jew by choice who wants to learn because he or she has met someone of the Jewish faith.
